“If you point these thins out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.” (1st Timothy 4:6)
Timothy’s early training under the guidance of a godly mother and grandmother was a precious heritage (2nd Timothy 1:5-6 “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded now lives in your also, Paul said. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through he laying on of my hands.)
The training that Paul refers to, made him a good minister or servant (Greek – diakonos) of Jesus and His church. It molded not only Timothy’s thinking but his very life.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY:
Precious Abba, Paul wrote his letter to Timothy and refers to his training from both his grandmother and mother, that held a strong influence on his life and the ministry that Paul recognized, as did many others. When you are guided by family members in the way of God’s will and also of the need for your own commitment to God through Christ, it becomes evident to those in leadership positions to recognize your strong faith and heavy influence in your life from an early age. Your faith, then is not “flipping a switch” to minister to others; rather, it becomes second nature to your daily live. You simply recognize the need that others may not, and respond to it. In honor of our relationship with You Abba and Your Son Christ Jesus, we pray that we will always remember all that we have taught to us, by those close to us, both family and friends. Amen
THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
“Everyone wants to help with the harvest, but few show up to plow the ground!”
“When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of he law.” (Matthew 7:28-29)
Jesus revealed He was different from all human teachers in the authority people experience as He taught. Only God has such authority. In fact, the people were amazed at the teaching of Jesus because of His interpretations were original. Only ordained rabbis were permitted to offer unique interpretations of the Law.
The function of the scribes, the ordinary teachers of the Law, was to repeat what had been established by rabbinic authority. Jesus did not fit into this common mold, not by a long shot!
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42)
Early Christian worship included teaching based on the Old Testament and on experiences with Jesus, community fellowship meals, prayer, and praise, and this led to significant church growth.
Prayer had been significant in Jesus’ life. It was prominent in the early church throughout the Book of Acts. Especially emphasized is unity of mind among believers. Teaching is an indispensable function and a continuous process within the community of faith. Teaching is as close to the heartbeat of a congregation as are fellowship, ministry, and prayer.
SECOND THOUGHT of the DAY:
“The eunuch asked Philip, ‘Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?’ Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.” (Acts 8:34-35)
This passage describes a bridge in missions moving from Samaria toward the ends of he earth as called for in v1-8. Philip had gone to the Samaritans to share Christ; as the Samaritans lives at some distance from geographically from Judea, but a great distance culturally, socially and religiously. God led Philip into a still wider circle to reach an Ethiopian who was a eunuch and of a different race.
In an ideal teaching situation, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher sits in intimate conversation with a highly motivated learner explaining the meaning of he Word of God. In a real sense, all personal evangelism involves just this type of To those who have encountered someone like this Ethiopian man, it is a moment charged with excitement both for the teacher and the learner.
