A river watering the garden of Eden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there. The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.” (Genesis 2:10-14 – God Acts in Linear Time Not Cyclical)

The Bible locates all God’s actions in time and space. Human history is the arena of divine action even with the first people. The first couple did not lose a place in heaven and have to settle for earth. They were made from and belonged to earth. They lost intimacy with God and cooperation with one another and the environment, but God’s intention was always an earthly history with His creatures.

Dear Abba, we are reminded in the scripture from Genesis, that God had always intended an earthly history with His creatures. There is a day coming when God will send Jesus back, and no we still do not know when, but we pray this day, that all who have not sought forgiveness of their sins and been restored in relationship with God through Christ Jesus, will do so and not wait. It is really that important. Today we continue to pray our troops serving in faraway lands and those in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, that a peaceful solution might be found and let the fighting be silenced. We also pray for those who are suffering in body, mind, and/or spirit, with friends, family, and for those we don’t know. Amen

Life is short—-pray hard and study the book!”

The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth. Genealogy is a basic form of biblical history telling. It reveals how one generation expands its influence and abilities or how history continues through the centuries from one generation to another. All human events and generations are not the subject of biblical history. The Bible centers on events in which God gave identity to His people and worked out His purposes with them. Human hope of escape from the problems of history does not constitute history’s them. God’s acts to deliver His faithful people gain the center of attention.” (Genesis 9:18-19–God Acts in Linear Time Not Cyclical)

Israel’s salvation was dateable. God’s commands and saving acts gave meaning to time. God’s warnings had time conditions which He took seriously and fulfilled. The disobedient people had to pend forty years in the wilderness before hearing the command to conquer. This was a reference to their disobedience in the desert, where they spent 40 years wandering because of their lack of obedience to God. In fact, those that began the entry died in the desert, except Moses and Joshua.

Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders. Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. Unlike their fathers, they quickly turned from the way in which their fathers had walked, the way of obedience to the Lord’s commands. Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord had compassion them as they groaned under those who oppressed and afflicted them. But when the judge died, the people returned to way even more corrupt than those of their fathers, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. Therefore, the Lord was very angry with Israel and said, ‘Because this nation violated the covenant that I laid down for their forefathers and has not listen to me, I will no longer drive out before them and of the nations Joshua left when he died. I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their forefathers did.’ The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.” (Judges 2:16-23 – God Acts in Linear Time Not Cyclical)

History may appear to repeat itself as one generation fails to learn history’s lessons and repeats the sins of the previous generation. Even God’s acts of deliverance may appear to be repeating themselves in a cycle. The Book of Judges reflects this repetition of salvation and judgment God’s people experience, but the book tells the stories of each judge to show how God works with individuals in individual situations. God seeks to break through the sin cycle to bring His eternal purposes to His people. He thus moves history forward in linear succession to establish His kingdom.,

In those days of Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.” (Luke 2:1– God Acts in Linear Time Not Cyclical)

Jesus’ birth came in the ongoing stream of history. God worked through unbelieving rulers and their political purposes to provide the unrepeatable gift of salvation in Christ.
